Davyid Figler hosts a spoken word event this evening (5/26/05), bringing together nationally known poets, music and food at the Lewis Avenue Park at 4th street.

The Lewis Avenue Poetry Cafe comes to life again as the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services presents an evening of poetry, storytelling and music in the heart of downtown Las Vegas. The outdoor event, "Words vs. Words," takes place on Thursday, May 26, from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the Lewis Avenue Corridor, an urban park at 4th Street and Lewis Avenue. Admission is free. Call 229-5431 for information.

Hosted by local poet Dayvid Figler, "Words vs. Words" brings together a group of seasoned touring poets from around the country and Canada, including Alexis O'Hara, Claude Le Monde, Bucky Sinister and Morris Stegosaurus. Local poets Liz Quinones and olufunke moses will also participate. "For those who like poetry, there will be plenty," says Figler, "but for those who like smart, witty, eclectic performances, there will be even more."

In addition to the poetry, a local band, The Clydsdale, takes an old-fashioned country sound and updates it with a modern mix. Food and beverage vendors and cafe tables add to the ambience.

The program is funded, in part, by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
